Analyzing the impact of the Great Depression and internal farm worker immigration on the development of the U.S. government’s policy of repatriating Mexican workers during the Great Depression.

Esperanza Reborn is the moving story of a young girl who learns the importance of love and sacrifice for family members and friends. It is also a lesson about the cultural challenges faced by families living in poverty, especially immigrant and farmworker families.

The novel takes place on a large ranch in the state of Aguascalientes, Mexico, one of the places with the most revolutionary activity just a decade earlier, and in the fields of migrant farm workers near Arvin, California.

In the opening chapters of the novel, students are introduced to the different social classes dividing Mexico in the early twentieth century, a social class system that, much like that of the United States, was based not only on social status and education, but also on economic status and race. In the early decades of the 20th century, the vast majority of Mexicans were dissatisfied with the unequal distribution of wealth and land, as well as the lack of opportunities to participate in the country’s political and electoral process. Getty provides an online exhibition entitled «Mexico from Empire to Revolution,» which includes photographs and background information about the lives of ordinary people during the Revolution.
